Tilo Senger, PhD, MBA

Tilo Senger, PhD, MBA, is the Founder of Beyond Science, a Boston-based advisory and coaching practice dedicated to developing high-performing teams and guiding leaders through complexity and change in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. With more than 20 years of experience in drug development, Tilo brings a comprehensive understanding of the global biotech and pharma ecosystem, combining deep scientific expertise with strategic and operational leadership.

Through Beyond Science, Tilo partners with executives and organizations to strengthen leadership capabilities, shape strategy, and accelerate value creation across research and development. He is particularly recognized for coaching leaders in navigating uncertainty, fostering innovation, and building cohesive, purpose-driven teams in highly dynamic environments.

In parallel to his entrepreneurial work, Tilo serves as Vice President and Head of Global R&D Program Management at EMD Serono in Boston. Prior to this role, Tilo held a series of senior leadership positions within EMD Serono and Merck KGaA, where he drove end-to-end drug development strategies and organizational transformations. Earlier in his career, Tilo worked as consultant, advising on strategy development, R&D performance management, and strategic partnerships. He began his scientific career in academic research, including roles at the German Cancer Research Center, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and other international institutions, where he focused on virology, immunology, and vaccine development.

Tilo is known for his ability to bridge science, strategy, and leadership. He has led more than 50 innovation initiatives and drug development programs, translating complex strategies into actionable plans, and consistently delivering measurable impact. His leadership style emphasizes empowerment, clarity of purpose, and resilience, enabling organizations to thrive in times of transformation.

He holds a PhD from Heidelberg University and an Executive MBA from Mannheim Business School and ESSEC Business School.
